The O'Connell Landscape Modeling Lab conducts research on broad-scale ecosystem resiliency and conservation through data science, remote sensing, field ecology, and ecological experiments. We typically focus on wetland-dominated landscapes and largely use open-source tools to conduct our science.  Active research focuses on understanding spatiotemporal pattern and process in plant-soil interactions, habitat change, wetland plant productivity, phenology, biogeochemical cycling, water dynamics, and other environmental gradients.  See the Publications page to find copies of our papers. See the GitHub page to find project code.

We are recruiting a graduate student for Fall 2026, evaluating landscape wetland loss in the Prairie Pothole Region. See our Ad.
